Chicago VBAC VAGINAL BIRTH AFTER CESAREAN SECTION |
|
You’ve already had a baby by cesarean section. Now you’re expecting again. You can try a vaginal delivery or schedule a repeat c-section. 10 Reasons to Choose VBAC 1. VBAC is usually safer for mom and baby. 2. VBAC reduces the risks of infection to the mother. 3. Labor is good for babies in most cases. 4. Not having surgery makes mom’s recovery easier. 5. VBAC reduces the risks of respiratory problems in babies. 6. VBAC involves a shorter hospital stay. 7. 60—80% of women will be able to have a vaginal birth after a previous c-section. 8. Breastfeeding is easier after vaginal birth, usually for a variety of reasons, including faster and more direct access to your baby and less postpartum pain for mom. 9. VBAC can help prevent injury to your internal organs, like your bladder, intestines, or even the need for emergency hysterectomy. 10. VBAC is less expensive. 5 Things to Avoid with VBAC 1. Don’t even think about delivering at home. VBACs have real risks which may require immediate interventions only found in the hospital. Don’t risk your life or your baby’s life needlessly. 2. Don’t deliver in a hospital that does not have 24-hour neonatology and 24-hour anesthesia coverage in the hospital at all times, with an immediately-available OR team to support VBACs. 3. Don’t deliver with an obstetrician who cannot stay in the hospital with you during active labor. Watch out for obstetricians who deliver in more than one hospital, because they can’t be in more than one place at a time. 4. Don’t deliver with a provider who does not have privileges to do an emergency cesarean section, such as a midwife or some family practice doctors. In an emergency, minutes count. You cannot afford to wait for an obstetrician to be called in to perform a cesarean section. 5. Don’t go to a physician you don’t trust. Find an experienced qualified physician that’s right for you, then follow their advice. |
